TRAVEL KENNEL

A Home away from Home

A travel kennel is a home away from home for your pet. There is no one size fits all when it comes to kennels. Making sure that you choose a kennel that is appropriate is key to ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for your pet.

Choosing a Pet Kennel

Size

The container should have enough space for your pet to turn around in standing position without any hindrance and to sit and lie down in a natural position.

Construction

Either with rigid plastic or plywood, depending upon the size and nature of the dog. Metal bolts are to be used to secure both upper and lower parts of plastic containers. Many airlines do not accept clip-type closure kennels.

Ventilation

Ventilation opening should be available on all four sides of the kennel. The total ventilated area should be at least 16% of the total surface of all four sides.

Security

Proper locking facility should be available to prevent the pet from escaping. Metal bolts are to be used to secure both upper and lower parts of plastic containers.

Measuring your Pet

It is very important that you decide on the correct size of the travel kennel for your pet. The following formula, advocated by IATA will help you to pick up the correct travel kennel. Pl take the following measurements of your pet, as shown below in his/her natural

A: Length of the pet from tip of nose to base/root of the tail. (not till the full length of the tail)

B: Height from ground to elbow joint.

C: Width across shoulders or the widest point (whichever is the greater)

D: Height of the animal in natural standing position from ground. Till top of the head or ear tip.

Based on the above A, B, C & D measurements, you can decide the kennel size required for your pet. Before, you proceed further, a word of caution.  The calculated kennel dimensions are of INTERNAL DIMENSION OF THE KENNEL and you should add a min of 3 to 4 inches more to arrive at the external dimension of the travel kennel.

  • Length of the container = A + ½ Of B + 3 TO 4 Inches
  • Width of the container = C X 2 times + 3 Inches
  • Height of the container = D + 4 inches

In case of Brachycephalic (Snub Nose) breeds, some airlines recommend opting for kennel size 10% larger than required, as per the measurements above;  whereas some airline insist on opting for one size larger than the normally required kennel size.
